Sabino "Sam" M. Zayas, 73, Ladle Liner
Sabino "Sam" M. Zayas, age 73, of Lorain, died on Monday, November 27, 2000 at Grace Hospital-Amherst, following a lengthy illness.He was born on November 9, 1927 in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico, living in this area most of his life.
He worked as a ladle liner in the BOP Shop with U.S. Steel for 36 years, retiring in 1985.
Sam was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and United Steel Workers Union Local 1104. He enjoyed gardening, watching baseball, and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his 3 daughters: Anna Zayas, Juana Zayas and Brenda Del Grande, all of Lorain; 5 grandchildren; 4 brothers: Antonio of Jamaica Plains, MA, Mariano, Gregorio and Victor, all of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico; and 2 sisters: Leonides Zayas and Isabella Zayas, both of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico.
He is preceded in death by his wife Lois E. Zayas (nee Laber) in 1993; an infant son; and brother Eugenio.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2000 at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a 10:00 a.m. mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Rev. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
