Wendell E. Lathwell, 84, Father of Little League

Wendell E. Lathwell, age 94, of Lorain died on Saturday, December 9, 2000 at Amherst Hospital in Amherst, OH after a brief illness.

Mr. Lathwell was born on October 17, 1916 in Frankfort, MI. He was a graduate of Lorain High School and was a veteran of the US Navy SeaBees during WWII. Upon returning from his military service, he began a 40 year career with the Lorain City Engineering Department.

He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain.

In 1952, his tireless efforts brought Little League Baseball to Lorain: he became its first president and the catalyst for the construction of Lorain's first little league ball park.

As "The Father of Little League" in Lorain, he was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.

Mr. Lathwell was a long term member of the Elks, Knights of St. John and was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Lorain.

He is survived by his three sons: Randy Lathwell, Brad Lathwell, Larry Lathwell all of Lorain, three grandchildren and one brother: Keith Lathwell of Lorain.

Mr. Lathwell was preceded in death by his wife: Mildred (nee Carlsen) Lathwell on March 25, 1991, his parents: Ernest & Latta (nee Brandt) Lathwell and one brother: Donald.

Friends may call at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6th and Washington Street, Lorain on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services which will be 11:00 a.m. Rev. Dr. L.H. Chamberlain will officiate.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
