Valda Bottomley, 67, Ballerina

Valda Bottomley (nee Joubert) 67, of Lorain, formerly of Brookpark and Johannesburg, South Africa, passed away, Sunday, December 17, at Community Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, Lorain, following complication of a kidney ailment.

Mrs. Bottomley was born January 28, 1933 in Potchefstroom, South Africa and has lived in the United States since 1991.

Mrs. Bottomley was an accomplished ballerina, a member of the Royal Academy of Dance A.R.A.D, London England. She had studied dance at the Royal Ballet School and danced professionally with the Saddlers Wells Ballet Company, both of London. She had earned diplomas in piano from the Trinity College of Music London, England. In Johannesburg, she had founded and ran the Valda Joubert Ballet School, which continues to be run by her niece, Antoinette Joubert. She is a member of St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, Bay Village and was currently employed as a sales clerk in the Jewelry Department at Kaufmanns, North Olmsted.

Mrs. Bottomley is survived by her husband of 25 years, Anthony, whom she married January 2, 1975. Other survivors include a son Andrew Bottomley of North Olmsted and Sarah Cook of Maple Heights, a grandson Justin Cook and brother Eugene Joubert, 2 nieces and a nephew. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and Ernestina (nee Von Steinhobel) Joubert.

A memorial service will be Thursday, December 21, 2000 at 7:00pm at St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, 468 Bradley Rd. Bay Village, 44140, where friends may call for one hour before the service. Rev. James Tasker of the Church will officiate. Mrs. Bottomley's cremains will be interned with her family in the Westpark Cemetery, Johannesburg, South Africa. Memorials may be forwarded to the Church's Memorial Fund.
