Mary Catherine Samples, 84, Homemaker

Mary Catherine "Kate" Samples, (nee Gordon), age 84, of Perrysburg, formerly of Elyria, died on Tuesday, January 2, 2001 at The Manor of Perrysburg.

She was born on August 29, 1916 in Cable, Champaign County, OH.

Mary "Kate" was a homemaker for many years, and was employed for many years at C.H. Merthe Department Store, on Broad St. in Elyria. She had been active in the Erie Shores Human Society for many year and leaves behind many special friends whom she worked with. A very special on is her dog Susie, that she adopted and cared for years. Mary's love for children often found her caring for children, along with giving a helping hand with her grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by her son: Gary R. Samples, of Perrysburg, her daughter: Linda E. Warner, of Albuquerque, NM, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, her sisters: Gladys P. Rhodebeck, of Mount Gilead, OH, Alice M Walker, of Ontario, OH, Helen West, of Florida and Phyllis L. Zahn, of Mansfield, brothers: Ralph A. Gordon, Donald Gordon, Kenneth Paul Gordon, and David R. Gordon, all of Mansfield, numerous nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many loving friends and neighbors, who have given her support throughout her illness, with their time and love. Special mention to Carol Varner, Mary's primary caretaker at the assisted living residence, whom she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert R. Samples, in 1995, her brothers: Carl and Bill Gordon, her parents: Harry N. Gordon in 1974 and her mother: Lena G. (nee Zerkel) in 1969.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 08, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Rev. Richard Henry, Jr. pastor of Amherst Church of the Nazarene, will officiate.
