Alfred Pena, 70, Corporal in Marine Corps
Alfred Pena, age 70, of Sheffield Lake, died Monday, January 15, 2001, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, after a lengthy illness.Born on August 17, 1930 in Lorain, Alfred was a resident of Lorain until his move to Sheffield Lake in 1963.
He proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 until 1953 during which time he received his high school diploma. He was awarded the National Defense Service Ribbon.
Alfred worked as a Shipper at the National Tube/Lorain Works U.S. Steel for 43 years as well as a Grievance Manager for 30 years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, United Steel Workers Union Local 1104, where he was a former President for 2 term, Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, AMVETS, Marine Corps League, and Lorain Labor Agency.
Alfred was noted throughout Lorain for his fast softball pitch while playing for the Elyria Bowling Center Baseball Team, El Caribe Baseball Team, as well as numerous other teams throughout his years. He prepared income taxes for his co-workers at the Steel Mill as well as for the public, was presented with the First Hispanic Union President of the Steel Mill by the Mexican Mutual Society, and was extremely fond of spending time on the lake with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his 4 daughters: Nancy Smith, Jacquelyn Pena, Kathleen Thompson, and Tammy Raines, all of Sheffield Lake; 3 grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Lillian Muskovich of Lorain, and Grace Velasquez of Texas.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Jean (nee Medaglia) on December 29, 2000; daughter Lisa Jean Pena; parents Fred and Elizabeth (nee Deshotel): sister, Lydia Camacho in 1999; and 2 brothers: William in 1998 and Fred on December 22, 2000.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 19, 2001 from 2-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Services will begin on Saturday, January 20, 2001, with a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 521 Harris Rd., Sheffield Lake. Rev. Father Stephen Shields, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the Disable American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20.
