Jerry F. Zyp, 72, Great Lake Ships Captain

Jerry F. Zyp, former Great Lakes Ship Captain, and 8 year resident of Centralia, passed away on Thursday, January 18, at Centralia Providence Hospital, Centralia, Washington at the age of 72.
Born on December 24, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland to John and Margaret (nee Schultz) Zyp, he grew up in Baltimore and at the age of 10 moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He later moved to Avon Lake, where he resided for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 in Italy. After his service in the military he worked as a Ships Captain on the Great Lakes for 42 years with Pittsburgh Steel, later becoming U.S. Stee.
He was married to Sandy Reta MacIver on December 28, 1950 in the Bethany English Lutheran Church in Cleveland. She passed away on March 2, 1991. Following the death of his first wife, Zyp moved to the Centralia area. He was married to Ida Campell on December 29, 1993 in Centralia. She passed away in November of 1994.
In addition to his wives he was preceded in death by his father in 1990, his mother in 1991, and his sister, Linda Lee Zyp in 1997. He is survived by his son Douglas F. Zyp of Put-In-Bay, Ohio, his sister Betty Thayer (Donald) of Chehalis, Washington; his brother David Zyp (Patricia) of Cincinnati, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Rd. North Olmsted on Friday, January 26, at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements handled by the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 163 Avon-Belden Rd. Avon Lake.
