Robert W. Schnaufer, 80, Army Veteran

Robert W. Schnaufer, 80, of North Ridgeville and formerly of Avon Lake, passed away, Saturday January 20, 2001 at the New Life Hospice of St. Joseph, Lorain following a six-month illness (congestive heart failure). He was born January 19, 1921 in Cleveland and moved to Avon Lake in 1959 before moving to North Ridgeville seven years ago. During World War II he served in Europe in the U. S. Army in Company B 746th Sherman Tank Battalion. He retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1984 as a distribution worker at their Lakeside Ave., Cleveland Distribution Center. He attended the Lake Shore United Methodist Church in Avon Lake. He was also very active in Boy Scouting as a Scout Master with Troop 355 for over fifty years. He achieved the highest recognition and most prestigious award, the Silver Beaver from the Boy Scouts of America. In addition to scouting he enjoyed camping, hiking, canoeing, family vacations and attending grandchildren's sporting events.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sarah M. (nee Hibbs); two daughters, Diane Schenker of Avon Lake, Denise Russo of Westchester, OH; two sons, Robert L. of Avon Lake and Ronald J. Schnaufer of Avon; eight grandchildren; a sister, Arlene Behensky of Palm Beach, Florida; and four brothers, Daniel Kopchynski of Maple Hts., Richard Kopp of Charlotte, North Carolina; Stanley Kopchynski of Kent and Kenneth Kopchynski of Anaheim, California. He was preceded in death by his father, August Schnaufer and a brother, Albert Schnaufer.
Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 163 Avon-Belden Rd. Avon Lake from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home, Wednesday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. John R. Butchko will officiate.
