Walter S. Korab, 85, Army Veteran
Walter S. Korab, age 85, of Lorain, died Sunday, January 21, 2001 at his residence after a sudden illness.Born on September 20, 1915 in Lorain, he remained here his entire life.
He served in the U.S. Army as a PFC during WWII and was initially assigned to Luzon, Philippines and then later, other areas of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal.
Walter worked as a Crane Operator for Lorain Works U.S. Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1977.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Lorain, where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society, Ss. Cyril and Methodius Lodge KSKJ # 101, and United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.
He enjoyed bowling for the Holy Name and Saxon Club teams, as well as competing in many tournaments.
He is survived by his daughter, Leslie A. Antus; 2 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years Albina (nee Urbancic) in 1981; father, Peter Korab in 1948; mother Josephine (nee Bruszek) Korab in 1946; two brothers; Alex in 1992 and Stanley; and grandson, Jared Kane Antus in 1993.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Services will be conducted on Thursday, January 25, 2001 in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. with a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Lorain. Rev. Father Kevin Shemuga, pastor of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Full military honors will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20.
