Joseph P. Toth, 85, Butcher

Joseph P. Toth, age 85, of Nova, and formerly of Lorain, died Saturday, January 20, 2001 at Samaritan Hospital in Ashland, following an illness of one week. For the past one and one-half years, he was a resident at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Ashland.
He was born on November 1, 1915, in Port Clinton, OH, and came to Lorain as a child. He attended Lorain High School.
He started in the grocery business after high school with Dominic Rebman, learning meat butchering and cutting. He owned and operated Toth's Market on Vine Ave. in Lorain, in the 1940's. From 1949-1962 he worked at Tony Hermann's Food Fair on Pearl Ave. and E. 29th in Lorain. From 1962-1966 he owned and operated Toth's Market on Reid Ave. and W. 22nd St., in Lorain. From 1966 until his retirement in 1970, he was a meat cutter at Tony's Meats on E. 28th St., in Lorain.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and the parish Holy Name Society. After moving to Nova, OH in 1997 to live with his daughter, he attended Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Nova, OH. He was also a life member of the Erie Game Association, and former member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Council # 637.
His hobbies include gardening, and tending to his daughter's lambs and sheep.
Surviving is a son Joseph J., of Cleveland, OH; daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Judith A.) Bigham, with whom he made his home in Nova, OH; 2 grandsons: Robert Eric Bigham, Nova, and Jason Toth, of Cleveland; and a brother, John Toth, of Elyria Township.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha (nee Bodo), in 1981 and his second wife, Yovonne Rinella (nee Martinez), in 1997; his parents, John and Julia (nee Feher) Toth; brother, Alex; and sister, Pauline Molnar.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 23, 2001, from 4-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain (888-245-5118), where services will be Wednesday morning, January 24, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. 41295 North Ridge Rd., Elyria (Rts. 254 & 57). Father James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Holy Name Society of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church will conduct a rosary service on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
