A. David Baumhart Jr., 92, WWII Veteran
A. David Baumhart, Jr., 92, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center after a short illness.He was born on June 15, 1908 in Vermilion. He has been a Lorain resident for the past 33 years moving from Vermilion.
He received his A.B. and M.A. from Ohio University at Athens, in 1931.
He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II.
He was a Representative of Ohio; publishing house representative at Vermilion, Ohio during 1932 to 1939; member of the State Senate from 1937-1940; he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-seventh Congress and served from January 3, 1941 until his resignation on September 2, 1942, to accept his commission in the United States Navy, in which he served until discharged as a lieutenant commander on January 17, 1946; member of the public relations staff of Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation, Toledo, Ohio from 1946-1953; director, Republican National Committee in 1953 and 1954; elected as a Republican to the Eighty-fourth, Eight-fifth and Eighty-sixth Congresses (January 3, 1955-January 3, 1961); delegate to 1968 Republican National Convention; and was engaged as public relations consultant. He also served as a Service Director in Lorain under Mayor Woodrow Mathna and he was a chairman of Lorain Port Authority.
He was a member of the Christ Untied Methodist Church in Lorain. He was also a member of Master Mason Ely Lodge #424 for 50 years in Vermilion; Scottish Rite, Valley of Cleveland; Al Koran Shriners Temple in Cleveland; Sons of the American Revolution for 45 years; Charter member of the Firelands Bicentennial Chapter of SAR.
He is survived by his wife Lois M. (nee Parker) of 33 years; a son A. David Baumhart III of Bloomfield Hills, MI; and a grandson, Peter Baumhart of Bloomfield Hill, MI.
He is preceded in death by brother, Charles W. Baumhart, a stepmother, Frances Baumhart and his parents, Albert David and Effie (nee Washburn) Baumhart Sr.
Private family services were held. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion. Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion was in charge of arrangements.
