Charles J. Stanley, 74, WWII Veteran

Charles J. Stanley, 74, of Avon Lake, passed away, Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at his home following complications of cancer.

Mr. Stanley was born on November 11, 1926 in Cleveland and has lived in Avon Lake for the past 29 years.

Mr. Stanley was a WWII Army veteran, was one of the youngest soldiers at the age of 17, to be involved in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach. He also was at the Battle of the Buldge. While in the service he was presented with 5 bronze stars and 1 bronze arrowhead. He was self employed as a roofer and a pipe fitter with Union Local #120, Cleveland. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Avon Lake, The United Association of Plumbers, Pipe Fitters and Sprinkler Fitters. Member of VFW#, Post 5278 Cleveland, the American Legion, Post 211, Avon Lake and the Sheffield Lake Post of the Amvets #55.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Michelle L. Stanley and Josephine Stanley, both of Elyria and Barbara Grey of Cleveland. Other survivors include 2 grandchildren, Joseph D. Stanley and Samantha N. Stanley McCarthy, a sister, Geraldine J. Hinz of Virginia Beach, VA and Thomas (Frances) Stanley of Lorain.

Mr. Stanley is preceded in death by his parents, Charles J. and Teresa H. (nee Stemack) and a brother, Dick.

Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 162 Avon-Beldon Road, Avon Lake from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, January 26, 2001. Prayer service at the Funeral Home will be Saturday, January 27, 2001 at 9:15 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 32929 Lake Road, Avon Lake at 10:00 a.m. Father Timothy O' Connor of the church will officiate. The interment will be in St. Teresa Cemetery on a day and time to be announced.
