George S. Balog, 85, U.A.W. Member
George S. Balog, 85 of Lorain died Monday February 26, 2001 in Saint Joseph New Life Hospice Center, Lorain, following a brief illness.He was born April 28, 1915 in Lorain. He was a life long resident graduating from Lorain High School. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps earning a leadership award.
Mr. Balog was a member of the merchant marines before going to work for U. S. Steel. He retired from the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant as an Inspector.
He was a member of Saint Vitus Croatian Catholic Church, Lorain. He was also an active member of the United Auto Workers Union, local 425 Lorain, and the Senior Achievement Center, Lorain. He was an avid reader, spending many hours in the library. Mr. Balog took continuing education courses at Lorain Community College, and did well in his writing courses. He once rolled a 288 bowling game while with the United Auto Workers league.
Among the survivors are his daughters Stephanie Balog of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kathleen De Marko of Louisville, Kentucky, Elaine "Bonnie" Hibbard of Medina, Ohio and Corinne Folgel of Smyrna, Georgia: a sister Clara Kruppa of Lorain. Also four Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Clarice "Keesy" Balog; parents Mike and Eva (nee Maltar) Balog; brothers Paul, Stephen, and Charles Balog; sisters Theresa Rajher, Mary Garcia and Christine Scherrer.
Friends may call Wednesday 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, Lorain, Ohio, where the Parish Rosary will be prayed Wednesday 2:30 PM.
Funeral service will be Thursday with 9:30 AM Closing Prayers in the funeral home followed 10:00 AM Mass in Saint Vitus Croatian Catholic Church East 32nd Street and Pearl Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend father Simon Nekic, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Lorain.
