Mary Jane Banas, 62, Head Cashier
Mary Jane Banas, age 62, of Lorain, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at her residence following an extended illness.Miss Banas was born July 12, 1938 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city. She attended St. Ladislaus Parish School (Lorain) and went on to graduate from Lorain High School with the class of 1956.
For the past thirty-eight years, she had been employed as a head cashier in the retail grocery industry most recently working at Giant Eagle Market in Sheffield Village. She had previously been associated with Giant Eagle predecessors Fisher-Fazio and Rini-Rego; she began her career with the A & P Grocery Company.
A parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, she was a member of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 880. She was an active volunteer at the Lorain County Animal Protective League whose hobbies included gardening, and landscape maintenance in and around her home.
Survivors include her mother: Mary (nee Linko) of Lorain, brothers: Andrew of Hixson, Tennessee and Edward of Orlando, Florida and her sister Beverly Zahorec of Lorain. She was preceded in death by her father: John Banas, Sr., in 1962, and her brothers: John Banas, Jr., in 1973 and Richard Banas in 2000.
Friends may call Sunday, April 1, 2001 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where a Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, April 2, 2001 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 East Erie Avenue, Lorain. The Rev. John Elmer, associate pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
