Nellie Elizabeth Skaggs, 63, Amherst School System Employee

Nellie Elizabeth Skaggs (nee Layton), 63 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Friday morning April 6, 2001 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 3, 1937 in Ansted, West Virginia where she was raised and lived till moving
to South Amherst after her first marriage to her husband, Ken.

Before becoming a mother, she worked for many years as a waitress for the Chatterbox in Amherst. During the late 70's and early 80's she worked for the Amherst School System in various capacities. She was a member of North Lake Missionary Baptist Church and attended on occasion St. John United Church of Christ, both in South Amherst. Her time was dedicated to the care of her disabled daughter until her own disability limited her ability to carry on.

Survivors include her daughters, Connie Sue Skaggs of South Amherst and Carolyn Sue Savina of Milan; one granddaughter; a brother Lawrence "Dob" E. Layton, Jr. of Sacramento, CA; her sisters, Mary Ellen Conrad of Monroeville and Helen L. Bailey of Medina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Kenneth Monroe Skaggs on October 27, 1984; and her parents, Lawrence E., Sr. and Etha May (nee Cameron) Layton, Jr.; her brother John "Jr." Layton; and her sister Hazel L. Blankenship.

Friends may call Sunday, April 8, 2001 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hemple Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 9, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at North Lake Missionary a Baptist Church, 323 North Lake Street, South Amherst with the Rev. Carson Fraley, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
