Wilbert Earl Varner, 83, US Steel Retiree
Wilbert Earl Varner, 83 years of age and a resident of Lorain, passed away Thursday evening, April 12, 2001 at Cleveland Clinic following a 12 day illness.He was born July 19, 1917 in Apolo, PA where he was raised. He moved to Lorain in 1949 where he lived till moving to Amherst in 1960 then returning to Lorain in 1978.
He served in the US Army during World War II in various places including the European Theatre. He was employed at US Steel, Lorain for 34 years retiring from the Bop Shop. Mr. Varner enjoyed gardening, traveling and watching the Cleveland Indians.
Survivors include his sons, James of Westminister, CO, Joseph of Amherst, and Jack of LaGrange; daughters, Mary Ann Fryer of PA, Jan Moore of Lakeland, FL, Debra Schieve of Brimingham, Jill Carr and Judy Arlington, both of Amherst, 19 grandchildren, one great grandchild; a brother Herbert Varner; and a sister, Garnet Bowser, both of PA.
He was preceded in death by his son Robert Varner in 1990; his parents Lester Harrison and Mary E. (nee Bailey) Varner; by is brothers Albert, Norman, and Elmer Varner, and by his sisters Ruth and Olive.
Friends may call Monday, April 16, 2001 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. from the funeral home. Church Elder, Richard Fischer of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, Amherst will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst, Township.
