George Mendgik, 68, Installer/Repairman

George "Butch" Mendgik, age 68, of Amherst Township, died Friday May 4, 2001 at his residence following an illness of several months. He was born August 1, 1932 in Campbell, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since his childhood. Mr. Mendgik graduated from Lorain High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy as a broiler tender aboard the USS Columbus during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Medal.

He was employed as an installer/repairman for the Lorain Telephone Company (predecessor to both Centel and CenturyTel) and later served in the capacities of cable repair technician and instrument repair technician. He retires in 1992 following 37 years of service.

A member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church (Lorain), he was also a member of American Legion Post #30 of Lorain, and the United Communication Workers Union. An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies include hunting and fishing. He was also a fan of all televised sports and had formerly played baseball in the Lorain City Leagues.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years: Evelyn (nee Poliak), a son: Robert A. Mendgik of Amherst, a daughter: Linda J. Mendgik of Lorain, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: George and Ann (nee Hura) Mendgik.

Friends may call Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel- 3224 Broadway- Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church- Pearl Avenue at East 33rd Street- Lorain. The Rev. Laurie Miller, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park- Amherst Township, where members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans will conduct full military honors.
