Carl L. Visci, Sr., 83, U.S. Navy
Carl L. "Babe" Visci, Sr., age 83, of Lorain, died Sunday May 6, 2001 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an extended illness. He was born April 3, 1918 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city.As a youth, Mr. Visci was crowned national champion in the A.A.U. Golden Gloves competition for the lightweight division. He attended Lorain High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II- first assigned to the Combat Engineers Corps (Sea-Bee's) and later as a Military Policeman. A parishioner of St. Anthony Padua Catholic Church- he was a life member of Italian-American Veterans Post #1 (Lorain), Amvets Post #47 (Lorain), a member of the American Slovak Club, the United Polish Club, and the Polish American Citizens Club, as well as a member of United Steelworkers Local #1104.
He was an accomplished bowler and received recognition for bowling two perfect 300 games by the American Bowling Congress. An avid sports fan and ardent follower of the Cleveland Indians, he attended five World Series in his lifetime and was interviewed on local television during the last World Series in which the Indians participated.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years: Catherine (nee Brelich), daughters: Anita Spacek of Medina and Lori Mc Iiwaine of Elyria Township, 3 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a brother: Jesse residing in Sandusky. He was preceded in death by his parents: Louis and Theodora (nee Del Grasso) Visci, a son: Carl, Jr. in 1995, and a sister: Christine Drwal in 2001.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel- 3224 Broadway- Lorain where a memorial service will be conducted by members of Italian-American Veterans Post #1 at 7:00 p.m. A Christian Wake service will follow at 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anthony Padua Catholic Church- 1305 East Erie Avenue- Lorain. The Rev. John Elmer, O.F.M. Conv., associate pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park- Amherst Township- where military honors will be conducted by Italian-American Veterans Post #1.
