Doy R. Harper, 74, Pipe Stenciller
Doy R. Harper, age 74, of Amherst, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, in his home following a lengthy illness.Doy was born, November 2, 1926, in Roane County, West Virginia. He moved to Lorain in 1947, and had been a resident of South Amherst since 1962.
He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, attaining rank of Tec. 5. He served as a Military Police Officer, and received the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Harper was a Pipe Stenciller for Lorain Works U.S. Steel for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the West Ridge Enterprize Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Harper was Ordained a Deacon on August 21, 1962, in the Amherst Free Will Baptist Church, where he served as Clerk for 25 years. He was a member of United Steel Workers Local 1104, and enjoyed wood crafting.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie (nee Kerns) Harper; 4 sons: Roy, of Lorain, Ronnie, and Terry, both of Amherst, and Larry, of S. Amherst; 6 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Foy, of WV; and 5 sisters: Addie Cottrell, Ulvie Paxton, Thelma Cook, Rosalie Harper, and Ruth, all of WV.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oakey and Myrtle (nee Hill), 1 brother and 3 sisters.
The family will receive friends on Monday, May 14, 2001, from 4-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorian. Visitation will continue Tuesday, May 15 from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. at West Ridge Enterprize Baptist Church, 46280 Rt. 113, Amherst. Rev. Bob Nelson will officiate, assisted by Rev. Bill Fraley, pastor, of West Ridge Enterprize Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
