Toshi Matsunaga, 82, U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence

Toshi Matsunaga, 82, of Avon, passed away Saturday May 12 at the Avon Oaks Nursing Home, Avon following a lengthy illness.

He was born November 10, 1918 in Mountainview, California. He was a student at Stanford University for two years and served as a First Sgt. in the U.S. Army Counter-Intelligence during World War II. He moved to Avon from Cleveland 54 years ago.

Mr. Matsunaga was employed as an office machine technician for thirty years. He worked for American Greetings for eighteen years, before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Avon Methodist Church, Avon and enjoyed handcrafted rock jewelry and flower gardening.

Mr. Matsunaga is survived by his wife of 57 years, Masa (nee Nishi), whom he married May 12, 1944; a daughter, Judythe Hazel of Tempe, Arizona; two grandchildren, Stephen and Jennifer Hazel, a great grandchild; two sisters, Lucy and Alice both of San Jose, California; a brother, George of Salinas, California and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kunihisa and Tsuya (nee Inaba) Matsunaga.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Avon United Methodist Church, 37711 Detroit Rd. Avon on Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m. Rev. John R. Butchko, pastor, will officiate.
The family will receive friends following the service. Cremation by Busch Crematory. Memorials may be forwarded to the Avon United Methodist Church, 37711 Detroit Rd. Avon, OH 44011. Arrangements handled by the BUSCH-BURMEISTER FAMILY CHAPEL, 32000 Detroit Rd. Avon.
