Dean H. Hicks, 71, Master Bricklayer
Dean H. "700" Hicks, age 71, of Elyria, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at EMH Regional Medical Center following a sudden illness.Dean was born June 13, 1929, in Shelby, OH. He had been a resident of Elyria for 25 years after moving from Toledo.
He was a United States Army Veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was a Disabled American Veteran and a member of the Bricklayers and Mason Union No. 5 in Cleveland. He was also a very proud Native American, associated with the Mohawk and Cherokee tribes.
Dean was a Master Bricklayer, working for Mark's Custom Masonry. He also worked for Mackin Masonry for 48 years where he earned the title "700" for his ability to lay 700 bricks in one day. Early in his career, he worked for American Bridge. He enjoyed his dogs and fishing.
He is survived by his two sons: Mark of Lorain, Paul Hicks of Junction City, Kansas; 4 grandchildren; 3 sisters: Bessie Kelm, Pearl Hess, and Lucille Walton, all of Shelby, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Andrew and Hettie (nee Baldridge) Hicks; sisters: Mertle Corlett, Lyda Mackin; brothers: Emmitt, Arthur, Lester, Bob Hicks; and granddaughter: Angela Hicks.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, where services will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Steve Buckner, pastor of Cornerstone Community Church, Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. The Disabled American Veterans, Luis Paul Proy, Chapter 20, Lorain, will conduct full military honors.
