Andrew Metelsky, 74, WWII Veteran

Andrew Metelsky, age 74, of Lorain, died on Saturday, June 30, 2001 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

Born on December 13, 1926 in Lorain, he has been a lifelong resident here. He attended Longfellow Jr. High School, Lorain where he was active in the school's sports. He then attended Lorain High School.

He served in the United States Navy as a seaman 1st class aboard the U.S.S. Ballok CVE 115 during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and American area. He received the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the American Area Medal.

In his youth, he was employed as a tree trimmer for Union Line Clearance, and had also worked a short time for Brush Beryllium and American Ship Building Co., both of Lorain. He was employed in maintenance of the boiler shop at Lorain Works US Steel for 42 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of Ss Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Lorain. He also was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain, the United Steelworkers Union Local #1104, and the Golden Age Pensioners Club.

He enjoyed golfing, watching sports on television, crossword puzzles, bowling, softball, and classical music tenors.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years: Eve (nee Vance), brothers: Charles Bunevich and John Metelsky, both of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Efem, in 1933 and Helen (nee Lipinsky) Metelsky in 1978 and brother Dan Bunevich in 1997.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 3, 2001 from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at 10:30 a.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, 2238 E. 32nd Street, Lorain. Very Rev. Fr. Basil Stoyka, Arch Priest and pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain. The Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 will conduct full military honors.
