Edward Walter Gauman, 90, Finish Carpenter

Edward Walter Gauman, 90 years of age, and a resident of Lorain passed away Friday, July 6, 2001 at Dream Catcher's Group Home.

He was born October 16, 1910 in Sheffield Lake. He was raised in Amherst where he had lived all his life until 1990 when he moved to Lorain to be with his daughter.

He was employed as a finish carpenter for Bert Witte Construction Co. for 20 years retiring in 1969. As a young man, he worked for Cleveland Quarries and Ehlert Construction before joining the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and fought in the Luzon North Solomon's and Bismarck Archipelago battles. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in South Amherst and enjoyed gardening and watching the Cleveland Indians.

Survivors include a son Kevyn L. Gauman of Lorain and a daughter Mrs. Thomas (Meriel) Anderson of Amherst.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of five years: Ruth in 1941; his second wife of 45 years: Alice Kathleen (nee Washburn) Gauman; by his brothers: Fred, John, and Jacob Gauman; and by his sisters: Rose Holzhauer, Louise Pippert, Anna Holzhauer, Esther Hamlin, Ella Holmes, Hilda Gorr, and Mildred Gleason.

Friends may call Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. to the time of the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. The Rev. Peter Kerlin, Pastor of Old Stone United Methodist Church, Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
