Joseph F. Karney, 85, Quality Control Inspector
Joseph F. Karney, age 85, of Sheffield Township died Monday, July 9,l 2001 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born March 2, 1916 in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Sheffield Township for the past 48 years. He had previously lived in Lorain.Mr. Karney was a 1933 graduate of Shickshinny High School; he went on to serve as a sergeant with the United States Army during World War II where he was attached to the 593rd Army Air Force Base Unit as a tank commander/driver. He participated in battles throughout northern France, Normandy, the Rhineland, and central Europe. He was awarded the European-Asian-Middle Eastern service medal with five bronze stars as well as the good conduct medal. He was a life member of Mullen-Murray V.F.W. #451 in Lorain.
Mr. Karney was employed as a quality control inspector in the butt mills of U.S. Steel's Lorain works; he retired in 1978 following thirty-seven years of service. An active parishioner of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Elyria Township, he was a member of its Holy name Society. He was also a member of Lt. James McManus Council #637 of the Knights of Columbus (Lorain), as well as St. Lad's Club (Lorain).
An accomplished archer, additional hobbies include golf and bowling. He participated extensively in leagues sanctioned by the Knights of Columbus and the Italian-American Veterans in both sports.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years: Emma (nee Kuhn), a daughter: Christine M. Recupero of Uniontown, OH, a son: Joseph M. Karney of San Diego, 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, brothers: Bert Karney of Sheffield Township, John Karney of Brownhelm Township, and sisters: Barbara O'Connor of Kearney, NJ, and Marie Bailey of Hemet, CA.
Friends may call Wednesday, July 11, 2001 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain, where a rosary service will be recited by members of the St. Vincent DePaul Holy Name Society assisted by members of Knights of Columbus Council #637.
Funeral services will begin Thursday, July 12, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. The Rev. James Ols, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where V.F.W. Post #451 will conduct full military honors.
