Steven J. Golek, 76, Purple Heart Recipient
Steven J. Golek, 76, of Spring Hill, Florida, formerly of Lorain, OH died Monday, July 16, 2001 at his residence after being stricken with an apparent heart attack. Mr. Golek was born on December 19, 1924 in Lorain and was a 1942 graduate of Lorain High School. He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II and saw extensive service in Europe where he was wounded in battle and subsequently served many months as a prisoner of war. He was a Purple Heart Recipient.He was a member of Mullen-Murray V.F.W. Post #4451 and Amvets Post #47, both of Lorain. He was an active volunteer in veterans' programs in both Florida and Ohio and participated in annual D-Day remembrance services.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include sisters: Betty Paige of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Mary Carey of Lenexa, Kansas; one nephew; and several grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife: Helen; second wife: Coney "Connie" (nee McGumphy) in 1980; step-daughter: Pamela Kay Gregg in 1977; and his parents: Peter and Julie (nee Petroc) Golek.
Friends may call Friday, July 20, 2001 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at 12:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel- 3224 Broadway- Lorain. The Rev. James McKenzie will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Amvets Post #47 will conduct full military honors.
