Vernon F. Maher, 80, Enjoyed Fishing and Gardening
Vernon F. Maher, 80, of Avon Lake, formerly of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following a respiratory illness. Mr. Maher was born May 6, 1921 in Cleveland and had lived in Avon Lake for the past 12 years. Mr. Maher began his career in 1946 with the Pennsylvania Railroad and retired in 1982 from Conrail, Cleveland as a Yard Master. He served in the US Army Air Corp during World War II, stationed in Panama as a Medical Assistant. He attended Fenn College, Cleveland.Mr. Maher was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Cleveland. He was a master wood worker, specializing in miniatures, a member of the Small Scale Artist Guild and the Columbia Doll Club. He was also a member of the American Legion, Rocky River. He enjoyed fishing and golfing.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years: Mildred L. (nee Belohlavek); son: Kenneth (Judith) Maher of Avon Lake; daughter: Patricia (Ronald) Apple of Seven Hills; grandchildren Julie and Ryan Apple; brother: Donald of Parma; and sisters: Joan Greenly of North Olmsted, Nancy Maher of Alexandria, VA and Gloria Livingston of North Ridgeville.
Besides his parents, Vernon and Anna (nee Siehler), he is preceded in death by a brother: Raymond and a sister: Lydia Maher.
Friends may call at the BUSCH-BURMEISTER FAMILY CHAPEL, 163 Avon-Belden Road, Avon Lake on Friday, August 17, 2001 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. All services will be at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 32747 Lake Road, Avon Lake, on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Rev. Paul Hoffman, of St. James Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
