Donald P. Kelly, 77, Marine Corp Veteran
Donald Paul Kelly, 77, of Amherst, died Tuesday, September 11, 2001 in the Amherst Hospital Emergency Room following a lengthy illness. He was born July 29, 1924 in Lorain, where he was a lifelong resident.Mr. Kelly served with the US Marine Corp. from 1934-1945 serving in Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed at Norwalk Truck Line as a driver for 25 years, and later at Mahoning and Leasing in Cleveland, retiring in 1986. He was also the proprietor of a cigar store on 14th Street in Lorain.
Mr. Kelly was a life member of the Lorain Moose Lodge. He enjoyed participating in various leagues in golf and bowling. His hobbies also included coins and working on cars.
He is survived by daughter: Donna "Sue" Funari of Amherst; sister: Elaine Pysarchyk of Elyria; brother: Denver Kelly of Elyria.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Thomas H. Kelly and Eva Kelly-Hamlin (nee Bheam); brother: Vallyod Kelly; and sister: Phyllis Bathory.
Friends may call Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday at 9:45 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by his funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Rev. George Vrabel, associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where military honors will be conducted by Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
