John G. Athanas, 80, Retired Line Feeder

John G. Athanas, 80, of Lorain, died Friday, September 28, 2001 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph (Lorain) following an extended illness. He was born September 29, 1920 in Thisvi Thiron, Greece, and had been a resident of Lorain since 1956.

Mr. Athanas was employed as a line feeder at Ford Motor Company's Ohio Truck Plant in Avon, Ohio; he retired in 1983 following 23 years of service with the company.

He was a long-time member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (Lorain) and was also a member of the Panthisvian Society.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years: Maria (nee Karaboyias); son: George J. of Lorain; daughter: Dimitra of Lorain; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brothers: Sam of Ridgefield, New Jersey and Louis of Fairfield, New Jersey; and a sister: Valerie, residing in Greece.

He was preceded in death by his father: George in 1973 and mother: Dina (nee Mehalis) in 1975.

Friends may call Sunday, September 30, 2001 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, where a Triisayion services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call on Monday, October 1, 2001 in the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Boulevard, Lorain from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Michael Gulgas, pastor of St. Nicholas Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery - Lorain.

The family suggests memorials in Mr. Athanas' name to either St. Nicholas Greek Orthox Church, 2000 Tower Boulevard, Lorain, Ohio 44053 or to the American Cancer Society - 43099 North Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
