Lillian M. Schaeffer, 83, Nurse
Lillian M. Schaeffer (nee Bauman), 83 years of age and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday afternoon, October 12, 2001 at Golden Acres Nursing Home, Amherst.Born July 11, 1918 in Lorain she was raised in Brownhelm until age 12. From 1931 to 1940, she made her home in Lorain, graduating from Lorain High School with the class of 1936. She had been a resident of Amherst for 60 years.
A Licensed Practical Nurse, Mrs. Schaeffer graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1938. After graduating from nursing school, she worked for two years at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain. The balance of 44 year nursing career was spent at Amherst Hospital from which she retired in 1982. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst. She enjoyed yard work and refinishing old furniture.
Survivors include her son-in-law who looked after her, Richard A. Stark of Amherst, two grandchildren; brothers Ralph "Bert" Bauman of Sheffield Lake, and Edward Bauman of Greensboro, North Carolina; and by a sister Elsie Kilpatrick of Grafton.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Clair "Slip" Schaeffer in 1974, a son Edward "Earl" Schaeffer in 1960 at age 17, by her daughter, Claire L. Stark in 1994; and by her parents Henry and Clara (nee Haehner) Bauman.
Friends may call Tuesday, October 16, 2001 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello, pastor of ST. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.
