Wilbur C. Bohley, 87, Artistic Wood Carver

Wilbur C. Bohley, 87 years of age, and a resident of Amherst passed away, Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at Amherst Hospital following a brief illness.

Born July 19, 1914 in Elyria. Wilbur moved to Amherst when he was 6 and graduated from Amherst High School with the class of 1932 and has lived there ever since.

In 1933, during the great depression, Wilbur enlisted in the U.S. Army serving three 3 year tours of duty. He served as a Sergeant in the Anti Air Craft Battery during World War II protecting the Panama Canal until he was stricken with malaria receiving a medical discharge. Wilbur worked for A. Nabakowski Co., Amherst retiring after 30 years as a sheet metal worker in 1971. He was known locally as an Artistic Wood Carver in which he only used his pocket knife. He attended Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth Bohley (nee: Hollingsworth) in 1996, his parents Philip and Florence (nee: Gray) Bohley; his brother Roland Bohley and his sister Florence Pietch.

Graveside services will be held Friday, October 26, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. at Ridge Hill Memorial Park. The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of Amherst congregational United Church of Christ will officiate.
