John Petruna, 79, Machinist
John Petruna, age 79, of Sheffield Lake died Saturday, November 17, 2001 in the Intensive Care Unit of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center West following a brief illness.He was born July 7, 1922 in Beaverdale Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Sheffield Lake since 1947 coming from Pennsylvania.
A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Petruna served as a Private First Class with the 556th Sign Depot Corps in the Pacific theater. He was the recipient of the Army Occupation Medal as well as the World War II Victory Medal.
HE was most recently employed as a machinist for the Water Edge Corporation of Avon Lake retiring in 1985; he had previously been employed as a supervisor for the Freuhauf Trailer Company also of Avon Lake.
He was a long-time parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake, and was a member of American Legion Post #211 of Avon Lake. He was also a member of the American Slovak Club (Lorain) where he had served for many years as a bar tender. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Survivors include a son: James Petruna of Rocky River, daughter: Mary Petruna-Gore of North Olmsted, 4 grandchildren, and sisters: Mary Sparks of Cartaret, New Jersey, Leona Schuster of Massilion, and Marge Kieska of Linden New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents: Michael and Mary (nee Stanko) Petruna, by his brother: Michael and by a sister: Ann Kieska.
Friends may call Sunday, November 25, 2001 from 2 p.m. until the time of memorial services at 3:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. The Rev. Stephen Shields, pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Church will officiate.
