Neal Raymond Gilbert, 84

Born December 17, 1916 in Litchfield, OH. He was primarily raised in Lorain where he graduated with the class of 1934. He had made his home in Amherst since 1955.

Neal worked at U.S. Steel from 1936 to 1944 when he was called to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. In 1948, he became proprietor of the Gilbert Food Fare I Lorain which he operated until 1970.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Mae (nee: Sabin), Gilbert, his sons, Mr. Bruce Gilbert of New Zealand and Mr. Thomas Gilbert of Doylestown, OH; his daughter, Barbara Gilbert-Whitcomb of Lorain; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Irving and Nova (nee: Miller) Gilbert; his brother Gloyd Gilbert and his sister Vernadine Burgess.

Friends may call for a brief time of viewing prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. The Rev. Gilmer Fauber, pastor of St. Peters United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
