Robert Lee Hughes, 71, Mail Carrier

Robert Lee Hughes, 71 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Thursday, December 6, 2001 at Amherst Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born March 13, 1930 in Lorain, where he was raised. Robert had made his home in South Amherst for the past 42 years.

Robert served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during the Korean War. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for 28 years retiring in 1985. He also served as a police officer in South Amherst for 7 years. He was part of the South Amherst Booster Club while his children were in school. He loved traveling to Las Vegas.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Georgene "Genie" M. (nee: Bauch) Hughes; his sons, Mr. Dean M. Hughes of Lorain and Mr. Scott A. Hughes of Heartville, OH; 1 granddaughter, his brothers: Mr. Clyde R. Hughes of Nevada and Gale W. Hughes of Vermilion.

He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Minnibelle (nee: Muir) Hughes.

Friends may call Sunday, December 9, 2001 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 10, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Carson Fraley, pastor of North Lake Missionary Baptist, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
