Robert James Gnagy, 76, WWII Veteran

Robert James Gnagy, a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 23, 2001 at his home after a lengthy illness.

Born November 14, 1925 in Urichville, Ohio where he was raised, he has been a resident of Amherst since 1948.

Bob owned and operated his own heavy equipment company, Gnagy Trucking, for the past fifty years. He served the United States Army during WWII in the European Theater. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Eastern African Middle Eastern Ribbon with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal & the WWII Victory Medal. Aside from loving his work he enjoyed in his younger years bowling and as of late relaxing on the park bench in his yard watching the trains and commuters pass by.

Suvivors include hsi wife; Patricia (nee LaCourse) to whome he has been married since 1954; daughters, Charlotte Martinez of Bay town, TX.; Cynthia Gnagy of Amherst, OH, and Linda Lopaz of Highlands TX. and son Jeff Kopke of Perry, OH., many granchildren and great grandchildren; brothers Laverne Gnagy of Leesville, OH. and Paul Gnagy of AMherst, OH; sister, Opal Parrish of Newcomers town, OH. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Christina Brown; brothers, Elmer Gnagy, Samuel Gnagy, George Gnagy, Richard Gnagy; step-brothers: Pat Dillon, Mike Dillon, James Dillon and John Dillon; sister Grace Gnagy and step sister Myrtle Dillon; parents, Charles and Ava Gnagy.

Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home. Saint Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Full military honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst, Ohio.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to New Life Hospice, Elyria, Ohio.
