Eugene Davis, 82, WW II Veteran
Eugene Davis, a resident of Amherst, passed away Monday evening, December 31, 2001 at his home after a lengthy illness.He was born October 1, 1919 in Louisa, Kentucky where he was raised and lived till coming to Ohio after World War II. He has been a resident of Amherst since 1950.
He served n the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater, the East Indies and Papuan, New Guinea. He received the Asiatic pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Distinguished Unite Citation. Prior to leaving for the war, he ministered to his community as an evangelist. Mr. Davis was employed for 30 years at US Steel, Lorain, as an electrician. He was a member of Amherst Legion post #118 and enjoyed golfing, reading and gardening.
Survivors include his daughters Sharon James and Linda Hunn, both of Lorain and Cindy Seng of Amherst; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brother James Davis of Columbus; and sisters Nora Hayes and twin sister Ema Gene Cordle, both of Columbus, Virginia Hayes of Mechanicsburg, OH an Eurcle Skaggs of Louisa, KY.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Betty Jane (nee Cendrosky); his granddaughter, Sherry Lynn Beckstein; by his parents David and Hattie (nee Young) Davis; by his brothers, Amos Davis and Ed Davis; and by his sisters, Olive Davis, Ina Davis, Lilly LeMaster, and Dovie Green.
Friends may call Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave.; Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. from the Church of the Open Door; 43275 Telegraph Rd., Elyria with Dr. David Walls, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
