Jeanne F. McGivern, 94, Registered Nurse
Jeanne F. McGivern (nee Hopkins), of Westlake, passed away Monday, January 14 at St. John & West Shore Hospital, Westlake following a short illness. She was born January 8, 1908 in Cleveland and lived in Lakewood, Gates Mills, University Heights and Strongsville before moving to Westlake 4 years ago.Jeanne was a nursing student at St. John's Hospital, Cleveland and employed as a registered nurse there and at National Carbon before she married. She was a member of Gesu parish in University Heights. She volunteered for many years taking blood for the Red Cross and as a reader for the Cleveland Sight Center. Mrs. McGivern was a breeder of miniature and toy poodles and founder of Western Reserve Poodle Club, and a member of the Western Reserve Kennel Club. She was also a member of Las Caballeros, Cleveland where she showed horses and played polo on a woman's league. She was an avid golfer at Pine Ridge Country Club in Willowick and a secretary of the Cleveland Women's Golf Association; and she enjoyed bowling and served as secretary of the leagues she was involved with.
Mrs. McGivern is survived by three sons, Dr. Bernard E. McGivern, Jr. of Staten Island, New York; James W. of Ssan Matco, California and Dr. Patrick F. of Honolulu, Hawaii; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a sister, Nell Rimmel of Cleveland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard E. McGivern D.D.S. and her parents, Warren and Henrietta (nee Willett) Hopkins.
Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, 32000 Detroit Rd. Avon from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. Prayer Services will be held at the funeral home Thursday, January 17 at 9:45 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Raphael Church, 525 Dover Center Rd. Bay Village at 10:30 a.m. that Rev. Timothy Gareau will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland. Memorials may be forwarded at Mrs. McGivern's request to the Alzheimer's Association, 12200 Fairhill Road, Cleveland, OH 44120.
