Mary P. Carey, 85, Owner of Mary Rieger Carey Realty Co.
Mary P. Carey (nee Pogorelec), of Lenexa, Kansas, and formerly of Lorain, died Tuesday January 22, 2002 in the Sterling House of Lenexa following an extended illness. She was born August 29, 1916 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city until moving to Lenexa 2-1/2 years ago.Mrs. Carey was the owner of Mary Rieger Carey Realty Co. from 1960 - 1970. She was also employed at the former U.S. Steel Corp. from 1942 - 1947, and at the former A & P Supermarket and Fisher Foods.
A parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, she was a Membership Chairman of the Holy Name Society, and was the 1st woman in Lorain to be voted Holy Name Member of the Year. She was also very active in fundraising for the church. Mrs. Carey was a member and past president of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 451 Auxiliary; member and past president of the District 9 VFW Council; past officer of the Service Star Legion; very active fund raiser for the local veteran groups. She was past president of the Lorain County Council of Women Realtors, and a member of the Lorain Real Estate Board.
Mrs. Carey is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Carmella Rieger of Lenexa, Kansas; 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; sister: Betty Paige of Leawood, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband: George Carey on June 8, 1998; parents: Joseph and Julia (nee Petrac) Pogorelec; and brother: Steven Golek on July 16, 2001.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain, where the Holy Name Society will recite the rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 9:30 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter - 3501 Oberlin Avenue - Lorain. The Rev. G. Michael Williamson, associate pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.
The family suggests memorials in her memory to the Catholic Church of St. Peter Endowment Fund.
