Olga V. Gonzalez, 68, Co-Founder of Sacred Heart Chapel
Olga V. Gonzalez, (nee Torres), of Lorain, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.Born April 3, 1933 in Utuado, Puerto Rico, she moved to this area 50 years ago.
Her religion and Puerto Rican heritage were highly important, and were reflected in her role as one of the founding members of Sacred Heart Chapel. She also helped form the "Cursillo Movement" there, and was one of the oldest members of the parish at the time of her death.
Her love of family and friends sustained her through her illness, as did her religious faith and sense of humor. She enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, crocheting, and playing cards.
Olga retired from K-Mart Department Store in 1986 after 19 years of employment. Prior to that, she spent nine years as the youth activities coordinator at the Neighborhood House.
She is survived by her son, Ernie Velez, Jr. of Lorain; daughters, Olga Velez, of Lorain, Jeanette Velez, of Cleveland Heights and Miriam Velez, of San Jose, CA; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Hector Torres and Guillermo Torres, both of Lorain, Audali Torres, and Aurelio Torres, both of Utuado, Puerto Rico.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gil Torres; mother Ramona Rios; and sister, Gladys Salva, in 1979.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1, 2002 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Friends may also gather Saturday morning February 2, 2002 at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain, from 7:30 a.m. until time of funeral mass at 8:00 a.m. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
