Michael Sokol, 88, Skilled Machinist
Michael Sokol, 88, of Lorain, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at the Specialty Hospital of Lorain following a lengthy illness.Born November 20, 1913 in Lakewood, OH, he lived in North Olmsted for 17 years before moving to Lorain in 1985.
He worked as a skilled machinist in the machine repair dept. of General Motors, Parma for years, retiring in 1978. Prior to that, he was the co-owner of the Park Inn, State Route 113 in Birmingham, OH for 10 years.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain and a former member of St. Richard's Catholic Church, North Olmsted, where he was an active member and sang in the church choir for over 20 years. He was also a member of the United Auto Workers Union, Local 1005.
Mr. Sokol was a former senior scoutmaster for the Boy Scout Troop 97 of West Park, OH. He was a banjo player, outdoorsman and avid fisherman, having enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to fish aboard his boat, "True Pleasure".
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anne (nee German), son Kenneth Sokol, of Westlake, daughter, Nancy Hasenflue, of Orlando FL, 4 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren a sister, Pauline Benson of Elyria.
His parents Michael and Mary (nee Joseph) Sokol, son Douglas J. Sokol in 1988, his sisters, Marie Gray, Vera Koethe and Anne Gordon, all preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 8, 2002 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain where a parastas service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, February 9, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home followed by Divine Liturgy at 11:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 2711 W. 40th Street, Lorain. Rev. Fr. James J. Batcha, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
