Anthony J. Karpinski, 87, Police Sergeant

Anthony J. "Tony" Karpinski, of Lorain, died Monday, February 11, 2002 at the Holly Hill Nursing Home in Newbury, Ohio following a brief illness.

He was born December 6, 1914 in Lorain, Ohio where he resided his entire life. He was employed at U.S. Steel for 4 years, a sergeant for the Lorain Police Department for 25 years, he taught special education at Clearview for 1 years and was a baliff for Judge Henry Webber for 13 years and retired at the age of 63.

Mr. Karpinski attended Nativity BVM school, graduated from Lorain High School and attended Kent State University for 3 years studying education.

He was a member of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Church and its Holy Name Society, the United Polish club where he was a financial secretary, and of the YMCA for 30 years where he enjoyed working out and swimming until his recent illness, and the Alliance of Poles.

He played baseball in High School and for the American Legion in 1931, and was pitcher for C.Y.O. and later ion he coached Little League. Hobbies include vegetable gardening, fishing, especially at Kelly's Island swimming, and baseball.

Survivors include a son: William J. Karpinski of Phoenix, Arizona, daughter Karen Brubaker of Newbury, Ohio, grandson William M. and great granddaughter Emily, several nieces and nephews. Brothers John and Donald Karpinski of Lorain and Al Pikora of Littleton, Colorado and sister Patricia Pikora of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his wife Stephanie nee Waldecki in 1984. Parents: William and Margaret (Flaczynaki) and sister Josephine Marks.

Friends may call Thursday from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Dombrowski-Volak-Riddle Funeral Home 1939 Oberlin Ave. Lorain where the Holy Name Society will have a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church 418 15th Street, with the Rev. Robert Glepko pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
