Stella Poplar, 96, Enjoyed Traveling

Stella N. Poplar (nee Nowakowski), of Lorain, died Monday, February 18, 2002 at Hearthstone At Lorain following a short illness. Born on May 4, 1905 in Lorain, she has been a lifelong resident of the area.

She was a lifetime member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain and was active in their Alter and Rosary Society. As a child, she attended Nativity School. She married Robert S. Poplar on June 8, 1926 and was married for over 70 years until his death on December 7, 1997. She worked for several local stores as a sales clerk, including Lorain Dry Goods and O'Neil's at the Sheffield Center Mall. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Poland with her late husband and also flower and rose gardening.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Dale Murphy of Shelby, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Poplar, her parents, Frank and Apollinia (nee Borkowski) Nowakowski, sisters, Frances Jaykel and Anna Scortio and brothers, Leo and Constantine Nowakowski.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 p.m. at Dombrowski-Volak-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, where the Altar and Rosary Society will pray the Rosary at 3:00 p.m. Prayers will be said at the funeral home Saturday at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 418 15th Street, Lorain. Reverend Robert J. Glepko, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Clavary Cemetery, Lorain.
