Mike Kobylka, 84, Navy Veteran

Mike Kobylka, of Lorain died Thursday, February 21, 2002 at Amherst Manor Retirement Community, after a short illness.

He was born on October 8, 1917 in Toledo, Ohio and came to Lorain from there in 1920.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving as a seaman first class during World War II in the Caribbean, Trinidad, and Key West.

He worked as a crane operator in the 3 Seamless Finishing End Dept. of Lorain Works, US Steel, retiring in 1972 with 37.5 years of service.

He was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church, and a life member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans, Stefan Czarnecki Lodge 31420 of the Polish National Alliance, American Slovak Club, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #552 and William Penn Association.

He enjoyed bowling and playing cards.

Surviving is his son: Michael, of Amherst, 2 daughters: Mary Ann Johnson, of Denver, CO and Suzi Kobylka-Krieger, of Medina, 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a sister: Marcella Szymusiak, of Andover, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years: the former Mary M. Horvath in 1995, his daughter: Veronica in 1942, parents: Andrew and Julia (nee Kiniasz) Kobylka Kokotajlo in 1970, 2 brothers: Joseph in 1986 and John in 1980.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 26, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday Feb. 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be held on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Roman Catholic Church with Re. Fr. Thomas Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans will conduct full military honors.
