Sergio A. Alvarez, 67, Lorain Resident

Sergio A. Alvarez, 67, of Lorain, died Wednesday, February 27, 2002 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.

Born July 27, 1934 in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, he has lived in Lorain since 1959.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in Company M 32nd Infantry Specializing in heavy weapons. He received the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Medal.

He worked in maintenance at Ford Motor Co. Lorain Assembly Plant for 31 years retiring in 1992.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel where he had been active in bible study and marriage encounters. He was also a member of the United AutoWorkers Union Local 425. He enjoyed traveling and going to the movies, watching baseball and boxing on television, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his sons, Sergio Jr., of Elyria, and Angel, of Lorain, 6 daughters, Virginia Bracero, Sara Galvin, and Marilyn Rivera, Angela Bonilla, Yolanda Alvarez, Miriam Alvarez, all of Lorain, 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Juan Andujar, and Alfonso Andujar, both of Puerto Rico, sisters, Marie Andujar, Lila Figueroa, Romanita Villafane, all of Puerto Rico.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Beneranda "Wanda" (nee Malave) in 1994, brother, Manuel Andujar, sister Margarita Irizarry, and grandson, Phillip Alvarez, in 1978.

The family received friends at the Dovin Funeral Home Sunday. The family will also receive friends on Monday, March 4, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of funeral mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. William Thadden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20, will conduct full military honors.
