Joseph Deliman, 76, Volunteer Firefighter
Joseph C. Deliman, 76, of Lorain, died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a six-week illness.He was born February 28, 1926 in Lorain, Ohio and had resided in Sheffield Township for the past 53 years.
Mr. Deliman served with the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater on the USS Estes GC12 as a Seaman Second Class Gunner's Mate. He participated in the liberation of the Philippine Island and in Okinawa and observed the flag raising at Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with 2 stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Mr. Deliman worked at US Steel in Lorain for 40 years retiring in 1983 as general foreman in the Seamless Finishing Mills. He also was a charter member and volunteer firefighter with the Sheffield Township Fire Department.
He was a member of Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ in Lorain and the Men's Brotherhood of the Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 10646 in Lakewood and a social member of the Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 in Lorain.
Mr. Deliman was an avid card player and an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and his grandsons sports teams. He enjoyed bowling and participated in the Senior Friendship League on the US Steel Retiree team at Rebman Recreation in Lorain.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Wilma (nee Pongracz), daughter Jo Lynne Hall of Sheffield Township, son-in-law Mark A. Hall, and grandsons Mark Joseph Hall and Joseph Deliman Hall, both of Sheffield Township. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Bertha (nee Solomon) Deliman.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 4-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. at the Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ, E. 31st St. & Glove Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of the United Church of Christ in Amherst will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 451 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
