Joseph Louis Nemeth, 81, World War II Veteran

He was born March 2, 1921 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Mr. Nemeth served with the US Army during World War II as a Technician 5th Division Company D 31st Battalion IRTC. He saw action in Normandy and Franc and was captured by the Germans and held as a prisoner of war for over four months until he was liberated by the Russian army. He was awarded the EAMET Service Medal. He then served with the US Army Reserves from 1950 to 1953.

After the war he returned to Lorain and opened the Friendly Tavern, which he co-owned and operated during the late 1940's. He then worked at AMSHIP in Lorain, then at the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant and then at US Steel in Lorain as a Narrow Gauge Repairman retiring in 1982.

He was a member of United Steelworkers Local # 1104 in Lorain.

He is survived by his daughters: Nancy (Gary) Merk, of Castalia and Pamela (David) McVey of Vermilion; sons: Joseph L. Nemeth Jr. of vermilion and Mark Tscherne of Twinsburg, many grandchildren and great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elvria A. "Shorty" Nemeth (nee Orosz) on April 29, 2001, parents Louis and Elizabeth (nee Toth) Nemeth, sisters Margaret Jacobs and Elizabeth Jones, a daughter in infancy and daughter Rita "Jeannie" Pabon in 2000.

There will be no visitation. Military funeral services will be held Friday March 15 at 1 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Rittman, OH.
