Charles R. Summers, 74, Auto Worker

Charles R. Summers, age 74, of Lorain, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Born February 23, 1928 in Ceylon, Ohio, he moved to Lorain in 1962.

He served in the U.S. Army with a rank of Tech Sgt. during WWII and the Korean War.

He was employed at the General Motors Fisher Plant, Elyria as a shipping clerk for 28 years, retiring in 1988. Prior to that, he was a mechanic for E & L Transport Co. Lorain.

Charles was a member of United AutoWorkers Union Local 780, VFW Post 7576, Vermilion, a life member of American Legion Post 30, Lorain, and a Lt. in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lorain, where he taught boat safety classes.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating.

He is survived by 2 sons, Charlton of Willard and Timothy of Lorain; 2 daughters, Wilma Jean Summers and Betty Jane Lamm, both of Lumberton, NC; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Albert of Sandusky and John of Vermilion, Caroline Clouser of S. Amherst, and Mary Fritz of Huron.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Elizabeth R. "Lee" (nee Kocsis), in December, 2001; son, Charles Jr., parents, Vernon and Doris (nee Daniels) Summers; 2 brothers, Ralph and Jim; and sister Virginia Summers.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 8, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain where services will be conducted on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.

The American Legion Post 30 will conduct full military honors.
