Pedro Hernandez, 93, Enjoyed Baseball

Pedro R. Hernandez, age 93, of Lorain, died on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Lorain Manor Nursing Facility, Lorain, following a 5-year illness.

Pedro was born on February 22, 1909 in Rockdale, Texas, moving to Lorain in 1941. He worked in the Coke Dept. at National Tube Company for 33 years, retiring in 1974. Prior to that he worked in the coalmines in Malakoff, Texas.

Pedro enjoyed baseball, in which he managed a baseball team in Texas. He also enjoyed gardening, taking walks and feeding the animals.

He was a member of the Mexican American Citizens Club and the Mexican Mutual Society.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Eliza (nee Palacios) Hernandez, sons: Ernest Hernandez, of Sheffield Lake, Jesse Hernandez and Francisco Hernandez, both of Lorain, daughters: Adelina "Lele" Cornejo, Rita Hryszczenko, Alicia Hernandez and Sara Hernandez, all of Lorain, 26 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren, sisters: Maria Leibas, of Lorain, and Francisca Contreras, of Dallas, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father: Francisco R. Hernandez in 1973, mother: Florencia (nee Ruiz) in 1984, and brother: Ignacio in 1995.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 10, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be held on Monday, at 8:45 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 mass at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain, Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
