Albert Giancaterino, 81, World War II Veteran

Albert Giancaterino, age 81, of Lorain, died Saturday, March 9, 2002 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an extended illness. He was born October 10, 1920 in Steubenville, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since 1948 coming from Cleveland.

Mr. Giancaterino was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Cleveland. HE went on to serve as in corporal in the United States Army during World War II. Assigned to the 503rd Army Air Force Base Unit in Iceland, he was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed as a weigh master at US Steel's Lorain Works; he retired in 1982 following 32 years of service with the company.

A parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, he was also a member of the church's Holy Name Society.

He was an accomplished bowler and was once recognized for bowling a 700 series. He participated in many local leagues and was most active with those hosted at the Saxon Lanes (Lorain).

Mr. Giancaterino is survived by his wife of 53 years, Viola (nee Marcucci), sons: James of Sheffield Lake and Robert of Amherst, 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and a sister: Mary Favorito residing in Parma.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Vincenzio and Pasqualine (nee Lucian) Giancaterino, his stepfather: Querino "Woody" Crisante, brothers: Frank, Mario, and Louie, as well as infant siblings.

Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel-3224 Broadway- Lorain, where a rosary service will be conducted by members of the St. Peter Holy Name Society and the St. Francis of Assisi Mission Group at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by his funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter- 3501 Oberlin Avenue - Lorain. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery- Lorain.
