Ernest J. Singer, 87, Had 12 Hole-in-One's in Golf

Ernest J. "Ernie" Singer, 87, of Sheffield Lake, died Saturday March 16, 2002 in the critical care unit of Community Health Partners Hospital & Surgical Center in Lorain after a brief illness.

He was born January 2, 1915 in Lorain, Ohio and had resided in Sheffield Lake since 1956. He served with the Merchant Marines from 1938 to 1946.

Mr. Singer worked at US Steel in Lorain as a millwright for 28 years retiring in 1975.

He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostel Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake.

Mr. Singer served on Sheffield Lake city council as fourth ward councilman for 12 years.

He was a golden glove boxer and fought 168 bouts in the 135 pound class.

Mr. Singer enjoyed bowling and golf and has 12 hole-in-one's.

He is survived by his daughter Mrs. John (Dee) Szklar of Vermilion and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Genevieve (nee Troskey) on Dec. 24, 1990, son Bernard "Buddy" Singer on Dec. 11, 1957, parents Joseph and Katherine (nee Skalren) Singer, sister Marie Becker and brothers Charles Singer, Steve Singer and Joseph Singer.

Friends may call Tuesday 3-7 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. Sandy Smith, religous coordinator of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
