Augustine J. Novello, M.D., 90

Augustine J. Novello, M.D. age, 90, of Lorain, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, West following a brief illness.

He was born June 4, 1911 in Lorain and had been a resident of the city for most of his life.

He was a graduate of Lorain High School with the class of 1930 B and went on to attend the University of Rome where he obtained his medical degree in 1936. Following graduation, he served his internship and residency at St. John's Hospital and the Polyclinic Hospital both of Cleveland. Prior to the outbreak of World War II, he operated his own family medical practice in Ashtabula for five years.

During World War II he served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge from the military, Dr. Novello returned to his native Lorain and established his own medical practice. He maintained privileges at the former Lorain Community Hospital as well as the former St. Joseph Hospital and received recognition as being the first Physician to admit a patient to Lorain Community. He also was proud to have delivered in excess of 1,000 infants throughout his career. He retired in 1971.

Dr. Novello was a member of the Lorain County Medical Society, the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and received board certification from the American Academy of Family Practice. He also served as Fleet Surgeon for the Lorain Yacht Club as well as the Company Physician for the American Shipbuilding Company.

As a youth, he delivered copies of the Lorain Journal and the Lorain Times Herald and was proud to have totally paid for his first year of college with the profits he had earned from his efforts.

He was a member of Italian-American Veterans Post #1 of Lorain and the Lorain Senior Fellowship. He was also a member of the 14th Street Gang, where he delivered the invocation at its weekly breakfast meetings.

An avid bowler, Dr. Novello bowled with the Over the Hill Gang at Rebman's Recreation. He was also an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and of Ohio State University.

He was a long-time parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter (Lorain) where he was one of the original altar boys. He was also a member of the St. Peter Holy Name Society where he received honors as Parish Man of the Year in 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor (nee Finerty), sons: Joseph R. Novello, M.D. residing in Washington D.C., Donald A. Novello of San Francisco, daughter: Eileen Novello of Amherst, and granddaughter, Holly Wiersma-Argenti of Los Angeles.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Salvatore and Josephine (nee Glorioso) Novello, by a brother: Salvatore Novello, M.D. and by a sister, Concetta "Tina" Weibling.

Visitation will be Monday, April 01, 2002, from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, April 2, 2002 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. A memorial service will be conducted by members and officers of Italian-American veterans Post #1 at 6:45 p.m. Monday in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a rosary service conducted by members of the St. Peter Holy Name Society at 7:00 p.m.

Friends are asked to gather Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 10 a.m. in the Catholic Church of St. Peter (there will be no services at the funeral chapel) for the conduction of his funeral mass. The Rev. Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the church will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where military honors will be conducted by Italian-American veterans Post #1.
