Paul T. Shurr, 90, Journeyman Electrician

Paul T. Shurr, age 90, of Avon and formerly of Lorain died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home following an extended illness.

He was born January 20, 1912 in McElhatton, PA and had been a long time resident of Lorain.

Mr. Shurr was employed as a journeyman electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #129 of Lorain and recently received recognition as being the oldest member of that local. He retired in 1977.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran where he served as an Electrician's Mate First Class. He was recognized as Honor Man of his company in May of 1942. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the American Theater Ribbon.

He participated extensively in Golden Gloves boxing competition fighting under the ring name of Joey Greb. At that time, Nelson D. Rockefeller owned his boxing contract. Mr. Shurr fought 256 bouts between 1928 and 1942.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Virginia (nee Vitale) a son, Tom Shurr of Oberlin, a daughter: Sharon Koba-Carek, of Avon Lake, a step daughter, Katherine Gaydosh of Southington, OH , 3 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild, and sisters, Helen Harris of Scottsdale, AZ, and Mae Diehl of Williamsport, PA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Sarah (nee Farnsworth) Shurr), four sisters and three brothers.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5 p.m. until time of services at 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chris Hughes, pastor of Tower Baptist Church will officiate. Graveside services will be Thursday, April 4, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. in Jersey Shore Cemetery, Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania.
